History of the Bowling Green Open:
The Bowling Green Open Started in 1978 as a PDGA event held on a 9 hole temporary course at Lampkin Park (a few baskets and trees and poles were used). Everyone got a
players package and prizes were paid in cash. The paper records were lost due to many moves at those times, and the Disc Golf Association's PDGA records did not transfer to
the PDGA from the early events before the Players started running the PDGA in the early 1980s.
Over the years an amateur division was added, with first place getting a PDGA membership and moving to Pro!
When the PDGA started offering amateur divisions, so did the Bowling Green Open. We keep inviting all known players to come (snail mail and long distance phone calls) untill the
event started out growing the courses.
So we added more courses in Bowling Green and the surrounding area.
In 2000, to keep the event running locally, we started having the tournament over two different weekends with the local pros TD'ing the amateur divisions and the local amateurs
TD'ing the Pro Divisions.. We then used the profits from ams to fund the pro purse. The Amateurs rebelled at this pratice (Am-scam) so in 2009 we stopped taking from the
amateurs and put all their entry and profits back into the AM event (and the pro events suffered).
In 2015 The Kentucky State Championships were started as a Pro/AM A-tier using sponsor money only for the Pros bringing PROS back to Bowling Green.
In 2020, as the key volenteers were aging and a local Disc Golf Business had been saying for a few years that they were going to run the event, HB handed the keys (and
spreadsheets of how to handle all items) over to Combat Disc Golf. That was a major mistake as that business folded after taking sponsor and entry fees . . . .
For 2021 we (HB Clark and Bluegrass Disc Golf along with many, many volenteers) will resume the management of The BG Open, adding back the PRO divisions, thus starting a
new chapter in PDGA A-tier events in Bowling Green.
